Ek Balam
The monumental architecture of Ek Balam shows a powerful city that was occupied by the Maya from sometime between 100 B.C. and 300 A.D. until the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. The peak of development at Ek Balam was between 700 A.D. and 1000 A.D. when many new buildings were constructed and many older ones were enlarged. Ek Balam kingdom reached its splendor before Chichen Itza; nevertheless, it has been determined by inscriptions at both cities that there was contact between them and that some governors of Ek Balam attended events at Chichen Itza.
The most relevant structure on the site is the Acropolis that has been explored and restored since 1997. Inside the structure is found the Sac Xoc Naj (White house of reading or learning), the facade of the Sac Xoc Naj has the best conserved frontispiece stucco relieves in all the northern Yucatan area. The whiteness of the front that resembles the jaws of the earth monster, outstood among colorful frontispieces at the acropolis, this impressive construction is a reverence for one of most important rulers of Ek Balam, Ukit Kan Lek Tok.
Ek Balam has also its share of sacbeob (singular sacbe). These roads where built of limestone which is so white that travelers along these roads would have them visible even at night.

Coba
Coba was the largest mayan city in population during its splendor, estimated to have housed around 50,000 inhabitants and was conveniently located amongst 5 lagoons where crocodiles can still be found. A series of elevated stone and plaster roads radiate from the central site to various smaller sites near and far. These are known by the Maya term sacbe (plural sacbeob). Some of these causeways go east to the Caribbean coast, and the longest runs over 62 miles westwards to the site of Yaxuna.
The site contains 6,500 temples but only a small percentage has been cleared from the jungle and restored; the tallest, Nohoch Mul (Big Mountain) is 140 feet tall and has become the biggest attraction of the site being the only structure still open for climbing to the top.
The second largest temple at the site is known as La Iglesia (the church) due to the fact that many Mayans continue leaving gifts of worship on the steps of the structure.
The site was occupied by a sizable agricultural population by the 1st century. The bulk of Coba's major construction seems to have been made in the middle and late classic period, about 500 to 900 A.D., with most of the dated inscriptions from the 7th century. However, Coba remained an important site in the postclassic era and new temples were built and old ones kept in repair until at least the 14th century.

Tulum
The Maya site of Tulum may have also been formerly known by its ancient inhabitants as Zama, meaning City of Dawn.
The walls surrounding the site, eight meters thick and 400 meters long on the side parallel to the sea, allowed the Tulum strong hold to serve as a defense against invasion. From the numerous depictions in murals and other works around the site, Tulum seems to have been an important site of worship for the Diving or Descending God.
A description of Tulum was published by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in 1843 in the book Incidents of Travel in Yucatan. Stephens and Catherwood first visited Tulum in the mid-19th century A.D.
Tulum was occupied by the late postclassic around 1200 A.D. until contact with the Spanish in the early 16th century. Among some of the more spectacular buildings at the site is the Temple of the Frescoes where niched figurines of the Maya descending god decorate the façade; another impressive temple is the “Castillo” (Castle), which is twenty five feet tall and was built over a previous building that was colonnaded and had a beam and mortar roof. A small shrine seems to have been used as a beacon for incoming canoes. This characteristic of the site is probably one of the reasons the Maya founded the city of Tulum here in the first place, as Tulum would become a very prominent trading port of the Maya during the late postclassic.

Chichen itza
The New Seven Wonders of the World were announced on July 7th 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal after seven years of publicity and promotion. The Kukulcan temple is exactly 79 feet high considering the upper platform.
Chichen Itza was in its time of grandeur (between 800 and 1200 A.D.) the center of political, religious and military power in Yucatán.
The Mayas who lived in Chichen-Itza built many palaces, temples, and monuments. They were not only powerful warriors but also wise men who studied the stars and left a written record of their history in the form of carved glyphs. Their wise priests had an observatory built in the shape of a shell to study the stars and foretell the future. They also had their own ball games; to practice them they built a great ball court with walls and stands. They played with rubber balls that they have to pass through rings of stone. Only the kings, the priests, and the most important warriors lived in the great palaces. The common people lived in huts made of straw.
The city is divided into two principal areas: ”Chichén Viejo” (Old Chichen) and ”Chichén Nuevo” (New Chichen). Chichén Viejo was founded about 400 A.D. by the Maya and governed by priests. Here the architecture is characterized by many representations of the god Chaac, the Maya rain god. Chichen Nuevo began about 850 A.D. with the arrival of the Itzá from Central Mexico. The city was rebuilt by the Itza and is characterized by images of the god Kukulcan the feathered serpent. Around 1150 A.D. a new wave of Itza took over the city and ruled for another 150 years until Chichen Itza was finally overtaken by the rival city of Mayapan.

Mayan World
The Maya originated around 3,000 years ago in present-day Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador and Mexico. The Mayan empire flourished in the southern regions from around 250 AD to 900 AD. The empire in the south collapsed around 900 AD. Scholars have suggested, among other reasons, disease, political upheaval, overpopulation or drought. But while the empire in the south waned, that in the north, especially in the Yucatan, flourished until the Spanish conquest of the 16th century AD.
The Maya were very skilled farmers and also created a very sophisticated written language; some think it might have been the first written language native to the Americans.
The Maya also developed a highly ordered social class system and carried on trade throughout a network of cities that went as far south as Panama and as far north as Central Mexico. Being great mathematicians, their number system included the concept of zero, an idea unknown to the old Greeks, expert mathematicians themselves. The Maya used their mathematical knowledge along with celestial observations to perfection a calendar created by the Olmec which is a culture from the Mexican Gulf Coast and to create monuments to observe and commemorate the movements of the moon, the sun, and Venus.

Cancun
Cancun "Serpent Neszt"In spite of having an intimidate name for some, Cancun does not represent more than the peace and the magnificence transmitted through its turquoise waters and their mysterious past.
Cancun began its development at the beginning of the 70s, in the young state of Quintana Roo, located in the nowadays famous Yucatan Peninsula. It benefits from a semitropical climate, and an average temperature of 27°C, although it can get up to 35°C, with sunny days during most of the year.
Today, Cancun offers, along with its 30 km hotel strip, a coarse prism of more than 500 restaurants and commercial centers hosting world-wide recognized brands; as well as bars and night clubs, in which celebrations extend until late at night.
Cozumel
Cozumel "Place of Swallows"Old house of Ixchel (Mayan goddess of the fertility), is now the biggest inhabited island of Mexico, located 19 km west off the coast of Quintana Roo, with an extension of 53 km of sweet-lite sand, exuberant vegetation, endless groups of birds and one of the richest biodiversity reefs in the world. The crystalline waters of Cozumel allow a visibility of up to 70 meters and are considered as one of the five best places in the world to practice scuba diving and snorkeling, praised at its moment by the famous French scientist Jacques Cousteau.
Its only town is San Miguel de Cozumel, which has a relaxing Caribbean touch and counts with the most important wharf for international cruises in Mexico, in addition to an international airport that receives visitors willing to overflow their energy in the exciting night life that the island has to offer in the company of new friendships under the moon light.
Playa
Playa del CarmenPlaya del Carmen, the ancient maya city Xaman-Ha (Water of the North), is located in the heart of the Mayan Riviera, 68 km to the south of Cancun, and stands now as one of the most attractive destinies of the Mexican Caribbean, with its hypnotic beaches of smooth surge ideal to rest, take sunbaths and practice all type of activities.
At dusk, the “Fifth Avenue”, being the most famous meeting point, invites the visitors to enjoy an interesting cosmopolitan scene, where restaurants, bars, exclusive jewelry shops and boutiques, offer a pleasant entertainment option.
Aventuras
Within the magnificent options that the Mayan Riviera has to offer, Puerto Aventuras, a recent residential world-wide class community, is located 98 km south of Cancun, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Puerto Aventuras catches its visitors with a magical mix of abundant tropical beauty and a relaxed but sophisticated lifestyle.
Puerto Aventuras is surrounded by the main sites of interest in the Mayan Riviera. Nevertheless it keeps jealously its privacy; its Marina offers high class services to yacht owners who are fortunate enough to combine their passion for navigation, with a luxurious stay in some of the apartments or villas of the complex. Around the Marina, visitors can find all sorts of attractions, from restaurants with Mexican and international delights, a lagoon with dolphins, a museum where numerous objects rescued from shipwrecks are exhibited, to a beautiful 36-hole golf course designed by Thomas Leman.
Akumal
Akumal is without any doubt one of the most easy-going and calmed places of the Mayan Riviera that charms its visitors since they still have the possibility of observing different marine species in its mystical waters , like 4 of the 8 marine turtles of the world, that use this place as a nesting area. Located only 37 km south from Playa del Carmen, this small town becomes a favorite area for contemplation and isolated life lovers.
Akumal is in addition famous by its proximity to nearly two hundred entrances to underground caves, where one of the most exciting extreme sports at the present time can be practice, “cave diving”. The underground rivers guide the intrepid visitors towards the call “infraworld” of the ancient Mayan civilization; spectacular visions of millenarian geologic formations, fill with awe and astonish to all those who submerges in them.
Riviera
In the last years, the tourist supply has extended towards the south of Cancun, throughout beautiful white sand beaches; this tourist area is actually called the “Mayan Riviera”, which unfolds trough 100km and goes through the new and multiethnic city of Playa del Carmen, as well as the tourist developments of Puerto Aventuras, Akumal “Land of turtles”, and the magnificent and photogenic ancient city of Zama (dawn) called by the Spaniards “Tulum”.
Travel Tips
IMMIGRATION
If you are a national of Germany, Andorra, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bahamas, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, South Korea, Costa Rica, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the United States of America, Estonia, Finland, France, the Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Hong Kong, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Norway, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Rumania, San Marino, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland or Uruguay, you will be able to enter Mexico without any visa requirement, presenting your passport and the “Migratory Form of Tourist, Transmigrate, Visitor person of businesses or advisory Visitor", which you can obtain in travel agencies, air lines or at the same point of entry to Mexico. In case of requiring visa you are due to go to the consular representation of Mexico in your country, where you will be informed about the requirements to get the visa, since the requirements are different from country to country. The migratory agent at the entry point could also require that you prove to have the necessary economic liability and the return ticket to your country.
TIME ZONE
The Central Time Zone is in the Yucatan peninsula and observes standard time by subtracting six hours from GMT during standard time (GMT–6)
In México the daylight saving time is in effect from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, changing the time zone GMT-6 to GMT-5.
CLIMATE
The climate is tropical with summer rains from May to October (often extends into January); the average annual temperature is 78 F.
LANGUAGE
In Mexico the official language is Spanish. Although there can be found a great variety of dialects, most of Mexican citizens speak Spanish.
In the Yucatan Peninsula the locals speak Spanish as well as the Mayan yucatec which is a language catalogued by the UN as one of the most difficult languages of the world..
The tourists are warmly received in English and other languages like French, Italian and German..
CUIRRENCY
Mexico’s currency is the Mexican Peso. Bills can be found in denominations as follows: 20 pesos, 50 pesos, 100 pesos, 200 pesos, 500 pesos and some of 1000 pesos. Coins: 1 peso, 2 pesos, 5 pesos and 10 pesos.
Some prices might be presented in “Dollars” by the locals due to the constant flow of foreign tourism; however consider that they always refer to the American Dollar.
If your currency is different from the American Dollar, it is recommended to change directly to Mexican pesos to avoid lost with the exchange rates of each currency, being the best place to make this transaction an international bank with base in Mexico like Scotiabank; the hotels and exchange companies generally offer a very unfavorable type of exchange.
In order to avoid perhaps negative annoyances in your country to change Mexican pesos to your local currency, it is widely recommended to change all your Mexican pesos before returning to your country of origin.
ELECTRICITY
Mexico’s Electricity system is the same as that of the USA: 110 to 120 flat volts, 60 cycles in plugs.
WEIGHTS AND MEASURES
In Mexico the decimal metric system is used. Nevertheless, because of the great commercial influence of the United States in the Cancun area, it is frequently found the use of ounces, pounds, feet, miles and gallons from the English systems of measurements.
HEALTH
At the present time when traveling to Mexico no vaccinations are required.
It is a good idea to include in your packing any medications and other medical supplies you use on a daily basis. Even if you can find them in Mexico, there's a good chance the formulations will be stronger or weaker than the ones you're used to. These may include any prescriptions you already take, such as inhalers, allergy medication, and insulin. Packing an over-the-counter pain medication and diarrhea is also a good idea. People sometimes unexpectedly develop allergic reactions to the pollens and other allergens found in a new environment. Those with asthma or other allergies can unexpectedly react to these new substances.
In case of emergencies during the stay, the region counts with an ample inventory of qualified hospitals to take care of any eventuality. Season of mosquitoes runs from May to October; nevertheless it does not represent an annoyance when using repellent (biodegradable)
WATER
Although in all the hotels it is required to have current potable water in the rooms, we recommend only to consume bottled water, verifying that is perfectly sealed; in the restaurants and bars that Mistikterra recommend there is no risk of taking ice or to fear for the water that is used for the food preparation thus all of them count on health certificates.
SUN BATHS
The sun has healing properties and produces a feel good factor but the excessive exposure to the sun's rays could be a health hazard. In order to prevent sun burning always wear a tee shirt or similar when snorkeling, use high-factor bridgeable sunscreen during midday sun, usually from noon until 3pm. Children should wear long sleeved shirts, hats and high-factor biodegradable sunscreen. Babies under 9 months should be kept out of direct sunlight.
